The alarm on my phone went off, signaling that it was 4:00 pm. I had an appointment in just 40 minutes and I was tempted to reschedule it. I was currently on the other side of the city, meeting with a real estate developer at one of my many construction sites. Considering that it was rush hour, with traffic, it would take me no less than an hour to get back to my office and that was only if I rushed.

But fate was on my side that day and as it turned out, keeping that appointment was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I worked as a Business Coordinator for the City of San Jose and due to the complex nature of my job and the handful of different construction sites I was in charge of, I found myself constantly on the go. However, that wasn’t where my responsibilities ended. I was also put in charge of organizing and expanding minority owned businesses throughout the city.

I was freshly thirty and entranced by the vigorous demands and responsibilities associated with my position, so much so that I had completely overlooked having any kind of a social life. For some people that might have been pretty sad but I enjoyed the work. I was making excellent money and doing something I loved. A social life, I figured, would come later.

Besides, my recent attempts at breaking into dating the world weren’t exactly amazing. It wasn’t that I was unattractive. In fact, during my college years I had slept around and played the field, taking on the role of a serial womanizer. No. At just over 6’3 and 180 pounds, all muscle, I wasn’t unattractive by any stretch of the word. With my jet-black hair and piercing blue eyes, I was what some women considered quite handsome. So it wasn’t my looks that were the problem. I simply enjoyed being single and basking in the lifestyle of a bachelor.

That and maybe I had become just a little too nice for most women – which made it tough to compete with men who looked similar to me but were much more bold in their approach. In the past few months alone I had heard the infamous “maybe we should just be friends” line more times than I could count. Surprisingly, I had better luck with women when I was a womanizing jerk.

Then it happened.

Slowly but surely I began to expand my dating pool, paying more attention to women of color than I ever had. They were beautiful, curvaceous, and bold. Unlike white women, they didn’t always expect me to approach them with some grandiose gesture. Regardless, nothing ever came out of the few black women that I did court.

Great sex but nothing solid. I figured timing was everything and due to my job taking up so much of my time, I just didn’t have the energy to put all my effort into making something work on a more long-term basis.
